Border Roads Org: The constant in Ladakh

When traveling around Ladakh, you invariably end up spending hours at end on deserted stretches of smooth tarmac. All along these curvy, winding roads, there’s one companion which never leaves your back – the Border Roads Organization.

The fact that they manage to lay expressway quality roads on such a difficult terrain is wonderous enough. Not stopping there, they persistently drive the ideas of safe driving home by constant repetition.

During our maiden trip to the northern wonderland, we tried to capture as many of their roadside signage messages as possible. Informative, humorous, poetic, introspective – all flavors are on offer. Adding to the fun, Siachen Warriors have joined the party too.

We’ll stop beating around the bush now, and let you indulge on the messages below. Enjoy!

Poetic

जो बचाए अपना अंग सारी खुशियां उसके संग
(The one who protects his body keeps happiness near him)

Hurry makes worry

Drive with reason this holiday season

Mountains are a pleasure if you drive with leisure

If you can still hear your fears, shift a gear!

No race, no rally, enjoy the beauty of the valley

On the bends, slow friends.

Patriotic

अनुशासन देश को महान बनाता है
(Discipline makes a country great)

This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave

Humorous

Be gentle on my curves
(wink)

Gilgit: “Within reach”
Skardu: “Within reach”

(Both the places lie across the line of control, under Pakistan administration)

Be soft on my curves
😉

Dare devil? Not here please!

Check your nerves on my curves!

Driving risky after whisky.

There are another few that we couldn’t capture –

  • “Be gracious, I’m curvaceous”
  • “Don’t gossip. Let him drive”

Motivational / Inspirational

Life is a journey, not a destination.

Safety is the light. Let it shine.

On traveling

Travel is still the most intense mode of learning

(we can’t agree more 🙂 )

Life is short and the world is wide

Let’s wander where the Wi-Fi is weak

Passive aggressive

Fast won’t last!

If you are married, divorce speed.

Life is a journey. Complete it.

A spill + a slip, a hospital trip!

Life is short, don’t make is shorter.

Enjoy your ride, don’t commit suicide.

Better to be late than late Mr.

If you sleep your family will weep.
वाहन चलाते समय सोना जीवन को खोना

Drive slow, live longer.

Road safety related

Blow horn on curves

(A) Good driver is seldom hurt.

Go slow friends.

Check your brakes.

Sinking area ahead, drive carefully.

Stay alert, think safety.

Don’t drink and drive.

Hug your kids at home but belt them in car.

Snow slide prone area.

Speed and safety never meet.

Experts expect the unexpected.

Never depend on other fellow, he may be depending on you!

Some (well deserved) self praise

BRO जहाँ जहाँ विकास वहां वहां
(Wherever there’s BRO, there’s development)

You can rely on us and our roads

BRO works today for your better tomorrow.

Join hills, join hearts.

We dominate the indomitable!

(At Changla pass, at an altitude of 17668 ft or 5385 meters)

Adventure is our daily routine!

(At Khardungla pass, at an altitude of 17982 ft or 5481 meters)

Well, that was that. If there’s one organization that makes scaling Ladakh possible, it’s the BRO. Hats off to them.
