The gentle giants of Dubare

This visit was an impulsive detour while returning back to Hyderabad from a road-trip and a refreshing farm stay at Coorg (Madikeri), in the southern state of Karnataka. The place is called Dubare Elephant Camp, which is one of the many property hosted by Jungle Lodges and Resorts of the Karnataka State Govt. for promoting nature tourism.

The place is a 1 hour drive from Coorg and 5 hours from Bangalore, making it a perfect weekend getaway.

The setting is as scenic as it can get -> evergreen trees, the glistening waters of Kaveri surrounded by the western ghats. Once you cross the river, via a boat or on foot (like we did), you are welcomed by the place’s original inhabitants.

The magnificent giant Indian elephants walk about almost freely. They are fed, bathed and groomed by the dedicated mahouts. On a joyful day, one of the creatures might also put up a show to entertain the guests. The trumpets of the animals are heard loud and far. It’s easy to lose track of time.

If you stay for longer, you can enjoy a nature walk with a knowledgeable session on elephants by a trained naturalist. You can also book an overnight stay in one of the cottages.

Overall, the place is a must visit to get up close and personal with these enchanting wonders of nature. You will return with beaming smile.
